Progressive Combat Kenpo Academy
About Progressive Combat Kenpo
American Kenpo Karate is considered one of the top stand alone combat martial arts. Along with all the standard karate techniques, Kenpo has fierce multiple strikes, takedowns, joint locks and breaks. Some describe Kenpo as stand up grappling. When the opponent is taken to the ground, it is for the quick, brutal finish. With the advent of Mixed Martial Arts, UFC, Pride, Cage fighting, it became obvious that increased ground fighting skills are necessary.
Some Kenpo practitioners have come to acknowledge the necessity of evolving to keep up with practical self defense and the Martial Arts revolution. Jeff Speakman was featured in the January, 2007 issue of Black Belt Magazine advocating the inclusion of grappling and ground fighting techniques as a necessary evolution of the art. Mr. Speakman calls his updated version with the new grappling techniques Kenpo 5.0.
Progressive Combat Kenpo is based in American Kenpo. Along with the standard Kenpo techniques, break falls are introduced in the Orange rank, and then basic ground fighting skills are introduced in the Purple rank. Although forms and sets are still taught, they are not included in rank testing. The traditional techniques are reduced to about 5 per rank. The focus is on being able to assess your situation and apply the appropriate tools to neutralize the threat. As we progress from Purple to the higher ranks, the Kenpo techniques, takedowns, and ground fighting advance. Sparring is mandatory for rank advancement, but control and protective equipment are required. Starting in the Blue rank, weapons training is encouraged but it is not required for advancement until the Brown ranks.
